Introducing Murphy's Law Blog!

To keep students abreast of interesting legal developments, odd law trivia, and library events over the summer, and possibly into the next school year, the Law Library has started a new blog. To give you a taste, here is an excerpt from Murphy's first substantive blog entry:

"Murphy is pleased to provide an update on the most recent Murphy's Law newsletter. Several media outlets...ran articles last week discussing the government's efforts to avoid disclosing the substance of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), a pact it is currently negotiating with several foreign nations."

Religion Case Reporter: A New Library Database

University of Detroit Mercy Law Library patrons now have access to the Religion Case Reporter. This subscribed database specializes in U.S. state and Federal statutes and case law that discuss or relate to the free exercise and the establishment clauses of the United States Constitution. The database's coverage only goes back to January 1998. But the Religious Case Reporter provides updates on recently decided cases, such as two cases decided last week that address whether non-native Americans should be allowed to obtain and possess eagle feathers for religious purposes. See United States of America v. Hardman and United States of America v. Wilgus, ___ F. Supp. 2d ___ (D. Utah 2009), No: 2:99-CR-00166; 2:99-CR-00047; and 2:00-CR-00029. Dated February 13, 2009.

Most cases in this reporter are edited, but it is a great resource for patrons beginning research on an establishment or free exercise clause issue, or for tracking legal developments in specific areas ranging from animal cruelty to Native Americans to women and religion.

Read more about about the Religion Case Reporter in the March 2009 edition of Murphy's Law.

What is MURPHY?

MURPHY is the law library's online catalog; named in honor of the former Supreme Court Justice, Governor of Michigan, and legal research instructor at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, Frank Murphy. The catalog contains item and bibliographic records for the library's monographs, monographic sets, serials, reserves, and course reserves. Murphy will allow users not only to locate a particular title, but also to search for multiple materials by topic.
