Information for Prospective Members

General Law Review Information

  1. The Detroit Mercy Law Review publishes five issues per year containing articles from students and other scholarly commentaries on significant legal issues.
  2. Aside from being a scholarly publication, Law Review is also an organization whose members are among the top students in the law school.  It provides the opportunity to improve your research, writing, editorial, and analytical skills, as well as to meet other students and alumni, and develop a greater sense of the culture of the legal profession.  The skills developed by participating in Law Review are valued by employers.

Membership Information

  1. Students can join the UDM Law Review as either a Junior or Senior Member.
  2. To be eligible as a junior member, students must have at least 23 credits and a 2.8 GPA at the end of their first year.  To be eligible as a senior member, students must be within one year of graduation at the conclusion of the Spring semester, and have at least a 2.8 GPA at the end of the previous Fall semester.
  3. Prospective Junior Members can either grade-on or write-on to Law Review.  The top ten students regardless of program status (Day, Evening, Extended Day or Extended Evening) “grade on” to law review, and are offered membership.  Students who do not grade-on, but otherwise meet the qualifications to be a Junior Member, will have the opportunity to join through a write-on competition, by completing an assigned casenote.  Those students who qualify to either grade-on or write-on to Law Review will be notified in the summer, approximately two weeks after 1L grades are released by the Office of the Registrar.
  4. Prospective Senior Members will have the opportunity to join Law Review through a write-on competition, by completing an assigned casenote.  Eligible students will be notified shortly after the completion of Spring semester exams.
  5. Once on Law Review, students are responsible for completing several source-checking assignments over the course of the following year, writing two case digests in the first semester, and writing a note/comment in the second semester.  Several student-written articles will be chosen for publication in the Law Review.  Junior Members are eligible to receive one credit in the Fall Semester and two credits in the Spring Semester; Senior Members receive two credits in the Spring Semester.
