UDM School of Law Takes First Place
March 26, 2007

UDM took first place in the Niagara Cup International Law Moot Court Competition, held this year at Case Western. The championship-winning team of Kelly Benson,
Ivars Steins, Ryan Sheahan and Timothea Leung, with student coach Tiffani Frederick worked its way through the preliminary and final rounds, competing against teams from the U.S. and Canada, including teams from American University, Cornell, DePaul, University of Ottawa, University of Pittsburgh, and Wayne State.

This year the School of Law has sent nine teams to competitions around the country. In all but one of these competitions, UDM teams went on to compete in the advanced rounds. In many competitions, the School finished in the top quarter of all teams or better, as well as winning awards for brief writing or best oralists.

In the National Immigration Law Competition, the UDM team won Best Brief for the entire competition, beating teams from Harvard, Cornell and University of North Carolina. In the McGee National Civil Rights Competition, only one school out of 40 had two teams make it to the quarterfinals–UDM School of Law. UDM student Sean Cowley won the Overall Best Oralist award from that competition.

UDM’s 2006-07 external teams competed in the following competitions:

State of Michigan Moot Court Competition
National Moot Court Competition
Mardi Gras National Sports Law Moot Court Competition
National Immigration Law Moot Court Competition
Pace Environmental Law Moot Court Competition
Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition
William E. McGee National Civil Rights Competition
