J.D. Programs and Required Courses

UDM School of Law offers a three-year full-time program, four-year part-time day and evening programs, and a five-year part-time evening program, all leading to the J.D. degree.

Full Time 30 credits per year/3 years
Evening 24 credits per year/4 years
Extended Day 24 credits per year/4 years
Extended Evening 18 credits per year/5 years

A detailed estimate outlining cost of attendance for each program is available from Financial Aid.

Required Courses
J.D. required courses include: Contracts, Property, Torts, Civil Procedure, Applied Legal Theory and Analysis (ALTA), Core Concepts, Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Evidence, Professional Responsibility, Taxation, two Law Firm Program courses, a Clinic or Externship, an International Law elective, and an upper-level writing requirement.

New Curriculum
In fall 2007, the School of Law implemented a new curriculum that complements traditional theory- and doctrine-based course work with practical learning, providing a solid transition between law school and a legal career.  The entire curriculum not only addresses the third and critical transition year in law school, but enhances the first and second years with more legal theory, intensive legal writing, required clinical experience, and an international perspective. UDM has transformed its curriculum to address the challenges you will face in the profession.
